Book Reviews and Rock and Roll

Okay, so I have been pretty busy lately, but I’ve been Working on learning a few things, so I downloaded Notes on Nursing by Florence Nightingale and A Newfoundlander in Canada by Alan Doyle.

The nursing one has been fascinating to listen to as it talks of where nursing was at the time, and it shows how it has changed and how her thoughts were at the time (1800-1900). I dont have much experience in nursing, but it has been capturing my attention lately, and it gives me a look into the history of an aspect of nursing that has impacted things even now.

Alan Doyle is part of Great Big Sea, a fantastic folk rock band from Newfoundland, and they have so many good songs, but they are not funny. I found one of the stories he wrote recommended to me, and it would be worth listening to as the music is amazing. I was right; the Newfoundland accent is not very hard to understand (some people say it is, but for me, it’s not that difficult to understand for the most part), and it brings the story to life in a lovely way. It goes back to when he was a child to where the shows were and everything between; im not finished with it, but im really enjoying the story and feel like im sitting in a cozy kitchen having a conversation with Alan instead of listening to him read.

Both books make for good background noise, and I could experience something new while doing whatever was needed at the time.  Past me hated audiobooks and would be a little uppity if people listened to them over reading them; present me appreciates the ability to get the story while im able to do other things. Especially if you have a long commute (I used to have a 3-hour commute every day) or need the stimulation but have things in the way.

Ive been listening to a lot of rock and roll outside the books lately. It’s been my relaxing and pumping up music to and from my shift. Anywho, thats all the words coming to be for now, so im going to head off to make some food. I hope your day is lovely, and I will see you soon!

Till Next Time,

Meg
