Ive been avoiding ending this series, but it is one of my favourite series ive read to this day. I have loved this series since I found it; it has books, book-making, magic, fairies, mystical creatures and well-written villains and heroes.
The series is in the following order: Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath.
Inkheart – One cruel night, Meggie’s father reads aloud from a book called INKHEART– and an evil ruler escapes the boundaries of fiction and lands in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie is smack in the middle of the kind of adventure she has only read about in books. Meggie must learn to harness the magic that has conjured this nightmare. For only she can change the course of the story that has changed her life forever.
Inkspell – Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of INKHEART, the book whose characters became real. But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval world of his past. Distraught, Farid goes in search of Meggie, and before long, both are caught inside the book, too. But the story is threatening to evolve in ways neither of them could ever have imagined.
Inkdeath – The Adderhead–his immortality bound in a book by Meggie’s father, Mo–has ordered his henchmen to plunder the villages. The peasants’ only defense is a band of outlaws led by the Bluejay–Mo’s fictitious double, whose identity he has reluctantly adopted. But the Book of Immortality is unraveling, and the Adderhead again fears the White Women of Death. To bring the renegade Bluejay back to repair the book, the Adderhead kidnaps all the children in the kingdom, dooming them to slavery in his silver mines unless Mo surrends. First Dustfinger, now Mo: Can anyone save this cursed story?
Im still stuck at a spot I dont like to read past, but even then, I love this story. The world-building, the characters, and the villains- the story has so many things to love, and my perspective has changed as I have been older since I first read it. So I found new things to enjoy in the story I didn’t realize the first few reads around. I still love the Blue Jay song/poem written in Inkspell, and I enjoy seeing more details of the world as I listen/read and grow my imagination.
Mo is my favourite character as ive aged; it used to be Meggie, but ive come to realize I relate more to him and Ressa with more life experience. Meggie is still a loved character, but I realize now that it’s not someone I would necessarily want to be today; now, past me, I thought we would be fast friends and read lots of good books if given the chance to meet.
I dont want to finish Inkdeath because it means fully embracing the fact that I’m no longer that young; I think I could be wrong, but the story just grips my little wee heart, and it hurts for all the characters currently as they are in the middle of a predicament. I was not and still am not emotionally ready for that journey with them.
I highly recommend reading this book series, as it is fun and has a delightful mix of things to interest a variety of readers. It’s listed on Goodreads under YA, Middle School, Adventure, Fantasy, Teen, Magic, and Fiction, but I was 13 or so when I first read it and started to fall in love with the story three or four chapters in.
Thats all I have; if you give it a chance, I would love to hear what you think in the comments below (if you’d like to share that).
Till Next Time,
Meg
